Online Games: Fun or a Waste of Time?

🗣️ Speaking Practice – B1 Level

⏱️ Time: Around 60 minutes
🎯 Goal: Talk about online games in English, share your opinions, agree or disagree respectfully, and learn cool vocabulary to express yourself better!

Quick Survey (10 minutes)

Answer these questions by asking 3 friends (or thinking about your own answers if you're working solo):

  1. Do you play online games?

  2. How many hours per day or week?

  3. What games do you like?

👉 After asking, think about these:

  • Who plays the most?

  • Which games are the most popular?

Vocabulary Brainstorm (10 minutes)

Look at these words and decide: are they positive or negative?

Addiction, strategy, teamwork, relaxing, violence, competition, waste of time, fun, skills, health

🔹 Write two columns on your notebook:
Positive Words / Negative Words
Then match the words and talk about which ones describe your favorite games.

Watch & React (10 minutes)

Watch this short YouTube video (3 minutes):
👉 Are Games Bad For You? – Game Dave

After watching, think or discuss with a friend:

  • What are the main points the people say?

  • Do you agree or disagree? Why?

  • Say your opinion in 1 or 2 sentences.

Role Play: Let's Talk! (20 minutes)

🎲 Choose one role from below or make your own:

  • A parent who thinks games are bad

  • A teen gamer who loves games

  • A doctor who says too much gaming is unhealthy

  • A game developer who says games teach life skills

👥 If working with friends, do this in a group of 3 or 4.
Each person shares their opinion using simple English phrases like:

  • "In my opinion…"

  • "I think…"

  • "That's true, but…"

  • "I disagree because…"

If you're working alone, write what each character would say. Be creative!
